XIVDB Developer BlogDevBlog #9: Patch 3.3 + Site Update!June 6, 2016

Hello!

For the past 3-4 weeks I have been focusing on 2 things: Content Data and a service called XIVSync.

XIVSync

This is my little service that parses Lodestone and tracks characters, it is primarily used for another site called XIVPads. I plan on merging that site into this one so that I don't have to run 2 sites and I get all the benefit of the game database in 1 central location, that service is starting to get a bit costly (it tracks over 1 million characters a day!! Generating over 150 million exp/level events).

Due to that increase I need to focus on getting it moved over, this means rewriting much of the software (bye bye PHP, hello NodeJS) and moving the database to a proper vendor. This has taken quite some of my time, which is the reason why I haven't done any sort of dev blog for a month!

Content Data

When I first launched XIVDB v2 I had a few problems, the Search didn't work as expected, the Tooltips didn't work properly, and the content data was spread and inconsistent. I did a major rehaul to the Search which I am super happy about and tooltips are working (kinda, at least here XD).

Today I finally finish my rehaul on content data, a lot of this is behind the scenes but with it I can make a much more consistent data layout on the frontend and in the API. It is extremely easily for me to append data onto the site (manually, or through parsing some source), as well as when it is displayed it will look the same in all areas of the site, that is a bit plus!

It has also enabled me to add a bit more data onto the site, if you are interested in data mining, I have a GitHub repository setup that me, GarlandTools and GamerEscape folk all contribute to, you can find that here.

The next update will be the XIVSync and more general improvements to the site based on feedback. The XIVSync merge will include:

  • Character Profiles
  • Character Tracking: EXP/Level Events, Achievements
  • Achievement Ranking and Obtained Statistics
  • Wardrobe Tool, Gear sets and Gear Usage Statistics
  • Free Company and Linkshell profiles

Site Update 1st June 2016

General Changes:

  • The main search bar drop-down menu background image has been blurred to make the text more readable (accessibility issue)
  • Icons for: Enemy, Guildleves, Maps, Quests, NPCs, Shops and Titles have been remade to be consistent.
  • Added a background accent to the site (trying to add some flavor! Design critted :D) - If you do not like it, you can turn it off by going into Account > Site Settings and selecting "No Background" (Account required!)
  • The styles on the home page has been tweaked, cleaning things up.
  • Ad Block banners have been toned down to be less intrusive to the design

Fixes/Changes:

  • The pricing of some items above 1k has been fixed
  • The patch for items arriving in hot-fixes around the launch up to patch 2.2 has been fixed
  • The sites title when linked in Discord will now correctly say XIVDB.com (and not my name XD)
  • Sorting has been fixed for Guildleves
  • Fixed the styling of Todo tab in quests
  • Fixed a translation on the Register page
  • Improved the mobile styling for the register, login, and forgot password forms.
  • The background image brightness has been toned down in the account section. (too bright!)
  • Fixed the style of the feedback form.
  • The order of search tabs will now match when searching single content or all content.
  • The "Oops no information" notice will appear correctly on all pages with no info, with a button to submit data to the site.
  • Fixed a bug that would prevent "more details" from working in the Shopping Cart tool.

Content Data:

  • General
    • All content pages have had a design revamp. I've made it super modular so information can be tacked on and added in an extremely consistent way. It also uses a lot more horizontal space and I think feels better to navigate, it has the added benefit of being a bit more mobile responsive!

    • All content pages have been prepped for translations, when translators have time to plug away are the new text you should begin to see a much improved experience for: French, German and Japanese!
      • If you see any translation issues, please click the "Feedback" button and submit the issue!

    • Lodestone/Dev data has been moved to the right side, this is because I plan on adding custom data to the pages, including user generated submissions and general "help" information/statistics.
    • Links to "Garland Tools" and "Gamer Escape" have been added to content pages, these are listed on the right side and include their respective icons/logos! (Some links may not work, some require special treatment!)
    • A new button "Submit Information" has been added, clicking this will bring up a form where you can submit information to the site if you see it lacking in areas, it can also help me data mine stuff more easily. Right now there are two types of submissions:
      • Text Information; just any kind of informative help text such as "This minion is bought from the Mog Station".
      • Map Position; Submit map positions directly, this is saved in a format I can immediately publish live.
    • A "Jump to comments" link has been added to the top-right of content pages, it will also show the total amount of comments.
    • Comments and Screenshots now have a counter next to them like other tables
    • All tabs that contain tables will now be consistent across all content with table sorting and 25 view paging.
    • The "See Also" references have been upped from 50 to 300! Link away!
  • Achievements
    • Will now show what type of achievement it is
    • Will show prerequisite quests (eg: Dressed To Heal requires the quest: A Relic Reborn (Thyrus) completed)
    • Will show prerequisite achievements, including the total score for completion. (eg: Armed To The Teeth requires: Dressed To Heal)
    • Will show lead on achievements (eg: Dressed To Heal leads onto Armed To The Teeth
  • Actions
    • Traits are now included in "Actions" search content and pages. (eg Database > Skills > Gladiator will include Enhanced Rampart, etc)
    • Added a category of either:
      • Action (something you can use)
      • Trait (Passive ability)
      • Crafting
      • Linked-Ability (Skills that become active due to another skill or status effect)
    • Tooltip text layout has been improved and made more consistent with what is shown in game
    • Class/Job Affinity has been added
    • The number of "upgrades" a skill has and which levels is now shown
    • A "Skill Tree" has been added, this shows how a skill changes as you level up base on specific conditions such as what level you are, or if you are the class or not.
  • Emotes
    • Help text has been added which shows the usage for an emote
    • The correct command is now shown
    • Alias 1,2 and 3 will now be shown (eg: /fistbump, /fist, /brofist)
    • The emote category has been added
  • Enemies
    • Will now list the instances they're in (eg: Ifrit shown in 3 instances)
    • A user uploaded screenshot can be chosen to be shown on the main page, I plan to go through uploaded screenshots and feature them on their respective content pages!
  • Gathering (Work in progress)
    • Will now show the item being gathered
    • Displays the: Level, Gathering class level, difficulty and gathering type (eg: Harvesting)
    • Will display a list of node locations
  • Instances (* Notice at the bottom)
    • Will always show sync level, even if same as required level
    • Correctly displays "Any Role" (No preformed party restrictions)
    • The bosses and Tomestones dropped will now be shown
    • Item Drops and Chest Items have been split up
    • Chests will now list properly with their associated position
    • An "Items" tab has been added
  • Items
    • The tab "Craftable" has been renamed: "Created From" (craftable is not a word, doesn't translate well)
  • Guidleves
    • New sorting options when searching:
      • Gil Reward, EXP Reward, Level, Class/Job,Time Limit.
    • Will now correctly show the number of possible "rewards" when the same item can provide 2 different quantities.
  • Minions
    • Now lists minion race.
  • Titles
    • Now lists the achievements they're obtained from.
  • Places
    • Now lists all achievements within the zone.
    • Now lists all NPC's within a zone

Map Changes

  • Leaflet map system has been removed and replaced with a small custom map panning module, this is due to the difficulty of converting in game positions to long/lat with different scales. With huge help from Clorfiex over at Garland Tools, maps are now 2D, and don't load as tiles, this should provide a much more better experience and more accurate positions (not confirmed all positions!)
  • Added 1843 positions submitted by the community through the feedback form, thank you!!

API Changes

  • All API data will be returned in an A-Z ascending order
  • Recipe variable name changes:
    • _tree is now tree
    • _synths is now synths
  • All extended content has been modified, most familiar data should exist but it will now be consistent throughout all modules, anytime an "Item" is extended, the format will be the same anywhere it is extended in the API.
  • Maps have been added to the API, you can access the response here: https://api.xivdb.com/maps

Notices

Gathering

The gathering information I have on the site right now has been pulled from Libra, so it is not up to date. The in-game files handle gathering a lot differently than it is handled in Libra, the structure is completely different. I've added some basic information to the site for now but I require to do a lot more work on data mining these and importing them into the site in a consistent format across the in-game files, libra and even the lodestone.

Instances

Just a note that Loot Tables do not exist in the in-game files. Right now I have been obtaining them from libra and the lodestone, but SE tend to hide loot from these places during the launch of new patches and the loot tables don't get updated until after the fact.

I can easily add items to an instance so I will be adding a new "Submit Information" tab for loot tables where these can be populated manually and the community can contribute when they discover items!

Ads

At the bottom of the site is an Quiz ad, this will only show for US right now. This is not currently permanent and will last 2-3 more weeks, ZAM is testing a different ad supplier to hopefully reduce the need for vendors that happily sell negative ads (auto play videos, etc). If you ever see a bad ad, that is: Popups, auto plays, just looks crap, click the "Report" button under any ad as this goes straight to ZAM to sort out.
